The New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards were first given out in 2005.
Organisers were:
- Centre for Advanced Engineering (CAE)
- INGENIUM (Association of Local Government Engineering New Zealand Incorporated)
- Electricity Engineers’ Association of NZ (EEA)
- Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ)
Contributing organisations include: New Zealand Water and Wastes Association (NZWWA), the IPENZ Foundation, International Institute of Refrigeration New Zealand National Committee, and IRHACE.
Nominations (reported in the 18 November issue of the National Business Review) included:
- Wellington company Airport Equipment's air-bridges for the new double-deck 550-seat Airbus A380 (being sold in half a dozen countries)
- linking (within budget and on time) to the national grid, with cable reticulation and transmission lines, the Te Apiti windfarm (the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere) near Palmerston North
- a vege-polisher from WYMA Engineering in Christchurch - it can brush 40 tonnes of potatoes or root vegetables per hour to the cleanliness standards required for supermarkets
- the upgrading of a 33-year-old Nelson harbour tug for NZ$1.8 million (as against the $3m cost for a replacement)
- an interchange linking Auckland's Grafton Gully with the central motorway
