Nitrous oxide (chemical formula= N2O) is a greenhouse gas.
Physical properties[]
It has a slight sweet taste, and is oderless. (It is also called dinitrogen oxide or dinitrogen monoxide, or sometimes laughing gas).
Chemical composition and properties[]
It is a chemical compound with the chemical formula N2O. At room temperature, it is a colorless non-flammable gas, with a pleasant, slightly sweet odor and taste.
Uses[]
It is used in surgery and dentistry for its anesthetic and analgesic effects. It is commonly known as "laughing gas" due to the euphoric effects of inhaling it, a property that has led to its non-medical use as an inhalant drug. It is also used in motor racing as an oxidizer to increase the power output of Piston engines. Often it is incorrectly referred to as "NOS," referencing a manufacturer of automotive nitrous oxide equipment, Nitrous Oxide Systems.
