Satellite Engineering is an engineering discipline focusing on communications between earth communication stations and space-based communication satellites.
The discipline involves designing communication satellites, communicating with satellites, commanding satellites, testing the performance of satellites, designing and building earth stations, sizing antennas and amplifiers for satellite communications, and monitoring, repairing and installing satellite communication equipment.
Several industries have evolved from satellite communications:
- DBS - Direct broadcast satellite network (such as DirectTV and DISH Network)
- MSS - mobile satellite service for remote satellite communications using VSAT
- satellite phone
- satellite radio
- GNSS - Global Navigation Satellite System such as GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, Beidou, or IRNSS
