The '''United States''', otherwise known as  '''United States of America,''' is a constitutional federal republic (a federation)  comprising fifty federal states and a federal district. 

==Location==
The {{WPlink|country}} is situated mostly in central {{WPlink|North America}}, where its {{WPlink|Continental United States|forty-eight contiguous states}} and {{WPlink|Washington, D.C.}}, the federal capital district, lie between the {{WPlink|Pacific Ocean|Pacific}} and {{WPlink|Atlantic Ocean}}s, bordered by {{WPlink|Canada}} to the {{WPlink|Canada – United States border|north}} and {{WPlink|Mexico}} to the {{WPlink|United States–Mexico border|south}}.

The state of {{WPlink|Alaska}} is in the northwest of the continent, with Canada to its east and {{WPlink|Russia}} to the west across the {{WPlink|Bering Strait}}, and the state of {{WPlink|Hawaii}} is an {{WPlink|archipelago}} in the mid-Pacific. The United States also possesses {{WPlink|Territories of the United States|several territories}}, or {{WPlink|insular area}}s, scattered around the {{WPlink|Caribbean}} and Pacific.
