Back in saddle[]

I am back in saddle at Auckland, but not with earlier vigour, due to health problems consequent of old age.

I have forgotten many of the procedures required for the job as I had to move a lot in India due to my many commitments.

Shall try to best.

I have seen that you are doing wonders for Wikia. Good luck.

--Dore chakravarty 00:41, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Why this?[]

The Engineering Wikia is currently inactive. You can adopt this wiki and revive it.

--Dore chakravarty 05:20, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

(Answered elsewhere)

It appears this Engineering Wiki does not yet have a logo. Shall we steal Wikipedia's engineering logo designed by Wikipedia:User:mbeychok?
Or is somebody up to designing a new one? H Padleckas 15:42, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

I have just made two possible candidate logos for Engineering Wikia. See Engineering:Consensus track/Logo change.

Archiving this page[]

You have 91 sections on this Talk:page and it has become quite long. You can move some of the older, inactive sections to User talk:Robin Patterson/archive1 and shorten this current talk page. H Padleckas 17:54, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Right! I should spend more time here. Robin Patterson 15:24, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments. Shall wait. Why my name in the first place under Forum. I am ashamed. Your name should be the one. Shall wait for further information. Adding some more on titbids.

Orphaned pages[]

If you see this page, you will find about six articles which require completion. Out of this mine is one which I have to complete. I do not think I have time. Probably all can be deleted. Please think over and suggest.

--Dore chakravarty 00:28, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned pages can sit for ever without really harming the wiki in any way. I may look at them some day. Robin Patterson 15:24, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

In the main page it is still titbits and not tidbits. Is this OK please?

--Dore chakravarty 00:48, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

--Dore chakravarty 22:06, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Looks like a vandal playing with a red link. No longer a problem since proper article there. Robin Patterson 15:24, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

I have uploaded the procession view as indicated. The procession is, if I remember right, led by Mr.Krishna, our old National High School student at Bangalore, India. I hope he remembers me as a good volley ball player. He is the present Governor of Maharashtra, in India. Any thing more you require please?

I suggest you view Special:Contributions/Jhchang. You may have to accept that he will not return. No email contact possible. So you can improve the article as you wish! Robin Patterson 04:09, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

How to take out the contents of this link? Not able to make out.

--Dore chakravarty 00:44, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

I don't think ordinary people such as as you and I can edit "Special:" pages - they are generated afresh on demand. But what do you really want to do with the contents? Robin Patterson 04:09, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
(By the way, thank you for the full link - makes it so easy for me to look at what you are talking about!) I've looked. Special:Disambiguations is really fairly self-explanatory, so maybe you should read it again before proceeding to what I think should be done. The key to what to do is Submarine cable, which is, as it says, merely a disambiguation (sometimes called "dab" for short) page. Someone who knows what the first article is about can decide which of the pages listed on the "dab" page should be the real target of that link. That person then edits the page you are invited to "edit" (starting just by clicking the edit link) so that it points to the right page. Robin Patterson 04:09, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Wikia Tour[]

Shall see how best to help. But from my side, mine may not be worth, unless somebody competent corrects it.

--Dore chakravarty 05:41, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

At this time, I cannot think of any articles that are both ready and fitting to be "showcase" articles for the Wikia Tour yet, but I will keep this in mind. Shell and tube heat exchanger is a pretty decent article, although a couple more tidbits could be added. Is there a deadline for this?

Thank you for nominating me for sysop and bureaucrat adminship. Am I an administrator already or do I have to wait for approval, "inauguration", indoctrination, or some sort of conversion to be vested with the ability?

I don't know if he is a bureaucrat but if he is not, I propose that Dore chakravarty be made bureaucrat in Engineering Wikia also. In the history of Engineering Wikia, he has contributed the most. H Padleckas 02:42, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

(Copied both of those paragraphs to Engineering:Requests_for_adminship and responded there.)

Are you waiting for anything from me in this case of Mr H Padleckas?

Young people and Older people[]

I can see that you have understood correctly the shortages in Engineers. I shall do my best to think and write. I have to limit this because of sitting before PC for longer hours and getting into high sugar problems. I can also see that I am not suitable for the setup requirement of enWP as that is a general encyclopedia, meant for the general public, as a reference book only.

In the case of ENGINEERING articles, the aim is to make one understand what he reads and then ustilise this for his own benefit on the job or privately. To day, engineers, I think, have no time to read at all. On there jobs they get good money. This is why they also do not bother to gain additional knowledge. This is what I have observed in our family too.

Uncategorized images[]

What you have done now, I can derstand. Nothing more can be done as I can see. I have added only categories for some images and files appearing in respective lists. They do not appear there now. I think what I have done is correct. You need not bother about this now for the present.

Uncat pages[]

Why these pages are shown here though the categories are included? Not clear. Can you explain please?

--Dore chakravarty 20:56, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

The first one I looked at - Image:250px-Magnet0873.png - has no category link on the page. It probably would have had a category (and/or a license category) if the material had been copied from the EDIT BOX of Wikipedia - but in this case (as in many others) the Wikipedia image page says the image came from Commons: - so it would have been better to copy the material from the edit box at Commons. Maybe I'll do an example one to show you how I now deal with such copies. Robin Patterson 06:38, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

--Dore chakravarty 18:01, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Article in enWP 'Flocculation',with minimum edits, is better suited in Engineering wikia and the contents here are mainly of Chemical nature. Hence shifting is opined. The following paras give indication of the above.

Flocculation is a process where a solute comes out of solution in the form of floc or "flakes." The floc may then float to the top of the liquid, settle to the bottom of the liquid, or can be readily filtered from the liquid.
Flocculation & sedimentation is widely employed in the purification of drinking water as well as sewage treatment, stormwater treatment and treatment of other industrial wastewater streams.

You can please see how these can be merged.

I think it is copyrighted. How can we go about?

--Dore chakravarty 04:44, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Someone (possibly the original author) decided that it could be put on this GFDL site, thereby giving that person's consent to its use here. I can see no problem with copying it to another page on this site. If the person who owns the copyright (if any) objects, it can be removed. While it is on the site, it has meaningful text that may help other people to find this site, which is good. Robin Patterson 05:25, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Thermal power station[]

Intend editing this very old long page now, to reduce the size and also to improve. The file can be reduced by making it into subdivisions, as well as renaming them. Renaming suggested is Fossil power station. Subdivisions are like Steam generator,Steam turbine, Condenser etc. Suggestions are welcome as you are are experienced in these. Waiting please.

As u have said in the main page Wikipedia is an encyclopedia.

Thermal power station[]

Thanks for your comments on frequent interruptions.

I have redone some of the sketches which were not very good, as seen in enWP, as have been pointed out to me. But I can say that the sketches now which are there in enWP are originally, probably from TVA only, on which I had a book (got from TVA in US, on my visit in 1962) but they are no more with me.

I do not want to get into argument with the author of enWP, commenting on this. But enWP needs this becuse of the requirements there. These represent the early designs. Now there is an engineer in NZ/Auckland, with long experience in Gujarat(India) Thermal Stations, I am expecting more details from him on the latest technology.

Promotion to bureaucrat proposal[]

I am proposing to promote you to bureaucrat in this Engineering Wikia. Do you accept the promotion to bureaucrat ?

Although User:Dore chakravarty has been the most active User in this Engineering Wikia (and that was very good), his age is in his middle 80's and some day, he may no longer be able to actively contribute to this Wikia. The other bureaucrats include User:Dalloliol who is bureaucrat by virtue of being the founder but has not made a single edit since then, User:Srini who seems to have vanished a long time ago, and myself (User: H Padleckas) who tries what he can but may be sometimes distracted by affairs in his personal life. I think we can use another bureaucrat in this Engineering Wikia just in case. H Padleckas 14:08, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

User:Dore chakravarty is definitely in favor of promoting you to bureaucrat. H Padleckas 14:11, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

I have promoted you to bureaucrat in Engineering Wikia. H Padleckas 09:42, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

List of mechanical engineers[]

You have edited this page, List of mechanical engineers, several times and the last edit to this page is yours. This page consists of a "help wanted" advertisement for two mechanical engineers first created in July 2006, and subsequently edited by you for format. I am considering nominating this page, List of mechanical engineers, and its associated Talk page for deletion, based on the fact that all of its contents must be obsolete by now, and that such advertisement is spam. Before I formally propose it for deletion, I want to run this by you, since you have been editing it.

I cannot find a page in this Engineering Wikia which is a list of pages proposed for deletion or speedy deletion. Is there such a page somewhere in Wikia? If not, I would like to create such a "Special page" called "List of pages proposed for deletion or speedy deletion". Such a special page would include not just articles but other kinds of pages, such as Talk and User pages, proposed for deletion. H Padleckas 14:30, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

(Copied the above to a forum and replied there. — Robin Patterson (Talk) 10:19, 16 July 2009 (UTC))

Where is Dore chakravarty ?[]

  1. Welcome back, Robin.
  2. Dore chakravarty has not edited this Engineering Wikia since July 8, 2009. Do you know his whereabouts? Shall we assume he is no longer participating here? H Padleckas 05:29, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

Re: Thank you for the fix[]

Hello, no problems about cleaning the mess up on the wiki earlier. I may be able to add to the content on the wiki in the future but I don't particularly have a superior knowledge on engineering; I am doing a course which contains a few parts of computer engineering but not much. Thanks about the compliment on the cat, it's not mine though. :) Nifky^ 13:34, September 11, 2010 (UTC)

Units of measurement[]

I found this wiki while looking for any with articles on units of measurement, as I have a wiki that specializes in this subject. It seems that most of the articles on this subject on this wiki were put there by Dore Chakravarty, who has not been active for years. But if there is anyone else who is a regular on this wiki and who is interested, they are welcome to visit the Units of Measurement wiki. -- BruceG 03:19, March 3, 2012 (UTC)

Actually, there are a few articles, like Kilogram, which were better done on this wiki than anything I had on Units of Measurement, and in those cases I will copy (have copied already, in the case of that one) the article from here (and later do necessary edits). (There was one error: we do not use Imperial units in the USA. We use United States customary units. Since 1959, they have been identical in most details, but the ton and hundredweight differ, while the stone has never been a part of the US customary system.)

I will also gradually, as you have invited me to do, put in interwiki links on this wiki to Units of Measurement. -- BruceG 13:38, March 3, 2012 (UTC)

"Centigrade" etc.[]

I suspect most of those broadcasters never heard of the term "Celsius."

On Wikia Central, someone was complaining about times being given in UTC -- which he thought was an American thing. He wanted GMT -- nobody had ever taught him that they were, to the extent that mattered to him, identical! (See [1]) -- BruceG 13:45, March 3, 2012 (UTC)
